Slope Calculator
Slope, y-intercept and the line equation from two points.
What is a slope calculator?
A slope calculator finds the slope of a line from two points, plus the y-intercept and the equation of the line.
How to use the slope calculator
Enter the x and y values of two points and click Calculate Slope. The calculator shows the slope, the y-intercept and the line equation.
Slope formula
Slope = (y2 − y1) ÷ (x2 − x1). The y-intercept is b = y − mx, so the line equation is y = mx + b.
Example
Points (1,2) and (3,6): Slope = (6 − 2) ÷ (3 − 1) = 4 ÷ 2 = 2, y-intercept = 0, so the line is y = 2x.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the slope of the line through (1,2) and (3,6)?
The slope is 2. Try it on the calculator above: set Point 2 to (3,6) and click Calculate Slope.
What does a slope of 0 mean?
A slope of 0 means the line is horizontal: y does not change as x changes.
What is the y-intercept?
The y-intercept is the y value where the line crosses the y-axis, when x = 0.
