Ratio Calculator
Simplify a ratio to lowest terms.
What is a ratio calculator?
A ratio calculator simplifies a ratio to its lowest terms. Enter two numbers and it divides both by their greatest common divisor, so you get the simplest form of the ratio.
How to use the ratio calculator
Enter the first number and the second number, then click Simplify Ratio. The calculator shows the simplified ratio and the working.
Formula
To simplify a ratio a : b, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of a and b, then divide both sides by it: (a ÷ GCD) : (b ÷ GCD).
Example
12 : 18 simplifies to 2 : 3, because the GCD of 12 and 18 is 6, and 12 ÷ 6 = 2 and 18 ÷ 6 = 3.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you simplify 12:18?
Divide both sides by their GCD, 6: 12 : 18 = 2 : 3. Try it on the calculator above.
What is a ratio?
A ratio compares two quantities, showing how many times one contains the other. For example, a ratio of 2 : 3 means for every 2 of the first there are 3 of the second.
How do you simplify a ratio?
Find the greatest common divisor of the two numbers and divide both sides by it. The result is the ratio in its simplest form.
