Graphing Calculator
Plot a straight line y = mx + b. Enter slope (m) and y-intercept (b).
What is a graphing calculator?
A graphing calculator draws the graph of a function so you can see how it behaves. This one plots straight lines in the form y = mx + b: enter the slope (m) and the y-intercept (b) and it draws the line, and tells you the slope and both intercepts.
How to use the graphing calculator
Enter the slope m and the y-intercept b, then click Draw Graph. The line appears on the grid with its equation, slope and intercepts shown underneath.
Formula
A straight line is written y = mx + b, where m is the slope (how steep the line is) and b is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis). The x-intercept is −b ÷ m.
Example
y = 2x + 1 has slope 2, y-intercept 1 and x-intercept −0.5. Try it above: set Slope m to 2 and Intercept b to 1, then click Draw Graph.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the slope of y = 2x + 1?
The slope is 2 — the number in front of x. It means y goes up by 2 for every 1 that x goes up.
What is the y-intercept of y = 2x + 1?
The y-intercept is 1 — the line crosses the y-axis at (0, 1).
How do you find the x-intercept?
Set y = 0 and solve for x: x = −b ÷ m. For y = 2x + 1, the x-intercept is −0.5.
